FOLLOW US: McIlroy was interviewed by the Sunday Independent's Paul Kimmage RORY RESENTS OLYMPIC GAMES R ory McIlroy revealed the real reason for his Olympic withdrawal in his big interview in yesterday's Sunday Independent with Paul Kimmage. Touching on a number of topics from Rio to Tiger Woods to his family, McIlroy said that choosing a nationality ended up with him resenting the Olympics. "All of a sudden it put me in a position where I had to question who I am. Who am I? Where am I from? Where do my loyalties lie? Who am I going to play for? Who do I not want to piss off the most? I resent the Olympic Games because of the position it put me in." Rory could have handled his Olympic withdrawal better, but he wasn't the only player that applies to. The time has come to respect his decision and move on. In culturally sensitive Northern Ireland, flags are such a political issue, which is the very essence of the ultra-nationalistic Olympic Games. McIlroy's actions, particularly his work with the Irish Open, still mark him out as a great ambassador for the game on this island. And in this case, actions speak louder than flag-waving does.
