B Pantone version B Pantone version T he images painted a portrait of the frustrations endured by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy – and the rest of the field – in their Masters quest Sunday. Neither could ignite the roars that would have accompanied a miraculous charge from 10 strokes back. Both struggled early. McIlroy closed with a 66 and finished in fourth place at 12-under for his best Masters performance, eclipsing his tie for eighth last year. He played his last 45 holes in 15-under, but with Jordan Spieth claiming the Green Jacket in a runaway, McIlroy's strong run was muted. There was Woods shaking his right wrist in pain after he banged a root on a shot from the pine straw at No. 9. He hadn't made a birdie until No. 8; he didn't hit a fairway until the 13th hole. One shot ended up against a patron's chair among the magnolias off the 10th fairway. The Masters was Spieth's show on Sunday, and all Woods, McIlroy and the rest of the field could do was watch and applaud.
